copper horses

in this morning
I am more asleep
than I am awake

after the dream
where copper horses
ride through fields of wheat
stirring up the fireflies
to dance frantically at dusk

down over the meadow
I watch
as the horses steadfastly run
and fall over the hill
swallowed by echoing gallops

life settles
and there is silence

my eyes pan across
the still horizon
with the sun laying itself down to rest

in full circle
I come to see that I stand alone
in the quiet

my weakening knees
crumble under me
and I grasp at the soil below
searching for time
where time had escaped me

along the surface
my fingers trace
until I find the marks
left from past trails

gliding along their edges
and plunging into their depths
with eyes closed
I recall the journey
and ride along once again
being swept away
as if the past was the present
as if today was yesterday
as if breaths were no longer stale

and in this dream
I then rise
from bended knees
to see that the copper horses have returned
back to the line
just below the sun

without hesitation I step
and break through the wheat of the field
chasing fireflies away
from my quickening steps
and I am soon galloping steadfastly
towards them
as if the future was the present
as if tomorrow was today
as if breaths were fresh and new

and in my dream
I am more awake
than I am asleep
