this waning bridge

I crossed over again today
tried to convince myself
that it’s just a temporary stay
the river’s wide, the bridge is long
this time will be different
I’ve learned how to be strong
but when I got to the other side
the streets were empty
and I broke down and cried

I need a burning ember
to take it all down
a scorching flame
to release me
from where I’ve been bound
to save myself
for what might be left
will someone please
burn this waning bridge down

there’s nothing left for me to see
yet I hold on to what’s past
as if it was all meant to be
if I saw a glimpse of yesterday
and chains were broken
could it last another day

if I stand here in the middle
and decide not to take it down
will this bridge hold me up forever
or should I jump and mercifully drown

I need a burning ember
to take it all down
a scorching flame
to release me
from where I’ve been bound
to save myself
for what might be left
will someone please
burn this waning bridge down
