what makes love stay?

as half my life
has cast shadows
on where I was
just yesterday
I see holes in familiar places
where once
there were roots and branches
of trees that I nurtured
through days of sun
and days
of saturating rain

I am weakened
from trying to refill
these holes
with something
that will
wrap its roots
tighter
onto me
and know how to bend
sway
replenish
through rain
wind
drought

I am fearful
that I
will forget
the beauty of a tree
and the smell
of the breeze
as it passes on through
its leaves

these holes stand empty
with only shadows
deepening their
existence
and I am left to wonder
what makes love stay?
