if our eyes met

I am not afraid,
when it is
still with me,
to admit,
when I should not,
that the autumn breeze
lures me back into you
and if our eyes met
somewhere between
the crunching of the leaves
and the slow dance
of the first blossom
that I would lose my breath,
but not ask for it back
because in that moment
I would remember
what silence
has tried to fade
and time
has tried to bury
yes, in that moment,
I would remember
why butterflies exist
